DID YOU KNOW…

The Sanibel School S.T.E.A.M. program is 100% community funded?

The Sanibel School is a public school within the School District of Lee County. Individual school enrichment programs do not receive funding from the school district, therefore The Sanibel School’s S.T.E.A.M. program relies solely on donations from people like you to pay for a full-time teacher and the curriculum and supplies needed every school year!

With the help of SSF, The Sanibel School is creating an entrepreneurship program?

In the STEAM lab, Sanibel students receive instruction in 3D design/printing, laser cutting, and heat press technologies! Students create custom items such as pencils, fidget spinners, notepads with custom logos and more! These items are then offered to the entire school community via a student-led STEAM Store.

We recently changed from S.T.E.M. to S.T.E.A.M.?

The “A” in STEAM = Art! A lot of art happens in the STEAM lab, including creating digital designs and learning how to sew. To be more inclusive, we’ve changed our name to The Sanibel School STE(A)M Program! Our students are encouraged to use art in the lab, as it naturally aligns and enhances STEM learning.

The Sanibel School S.T.E.A.M. program incorporates agriculture right into our school?

Recently, students engaged in the engineering of hydroponic garden towers & installing raised garden beds. From there, students learned first hand about how to plot, plant, & harvest produce. The hopes are students can continue to implement these hydroponic & solar gardening technologies and establish a school farmers market!

Sanibel School students regularly take field trips right in our community?

In addition to making monthly field trips to the J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife refuge, Sanibel School students also visit The Center For Rehabilitiation of Wildlife (CROW), Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) and Sea School, and the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum & Aquarium throughout the school year!

Students at The Sanibel School learn mechanics through hands-on classroom intitiatives?

Students learn age appropriate and safe use of both hand & power tools such as hammers, nails, small mitre box sets, drills and more! Additionally students go through a bike repair course with the STEAM teacher and use these real-life skills to maintain the school bicycles, which are then used during island field trips to Ding Darling and CROW!
